- (1884-1986)British politician. Born in London, he joined the Garment Workers' Union and later became a member of the Independent Labour Party. Subsequently he became president of the Glasgow Trades Union Congress. In 1922 he was elected to parliament. From 1950-1 he was minister of defence.
